Comet Holmes
Here are the member's images of comet Holmes that lit up our skies in October and November 2007..
Information is supplied under each photo ie name of observer, equipments used.

(David Conner ...)Attached is a snap I took of erupting Comet 17P/Holmes taken from
Somerby just before the cloud closed in. [Olympus Camedia C4000, auto exposure, manually focussed, on maximum zoom.]
It shows the constellation of Perseus, with the comet forming a nice icosceles triangle with alpha and delta Persei.
To the naked eye it was distictly none stellar, possibly about 1/3 the apparent diameter of the Moon, but difficult to say with the proximity
of the Moon!
It's magnitude looked similar to delta, i.e. about mag 3. Through binoculars the comet looked like a discus or Frisbee, with a very well
defined sharp edge. The edge and centre were slightly brighter than the rest of the disc.

(David Conner ...) This is a snapshot through my 10 inch Dobsonian, taken 28 October at 21h40m UT tonight. The disc is 1/5 the apparent diameter of the Moon (ie about 6
arcmins across). To my eyes it had a slight amber cast to it. The brighter bit within the disc at about 5 o'clock to the centre is not a
jet, but an out of focus star. Visually, the centre itself looked stellar.

Tony Abbey

(Tony Abbey ... ) Here is a photo I took last night around midnight as the clouds opened up a bit. It was still fairly misty, and of course, the moon was not far away. Meade 8"
plus Canon 350D DSLR, 10s exposure, then a little contrast stretching. It appears to have two cores - is it breaking up? - I dont think these are bright
background stars, but they might be. The extra contrast stretched version attached shows some other stars which certainly dont look as broad as the 'core' in P-Holmes.

(Paul Probert ...) I managed to get this picture in between the clouds and rain! Samsung DSLR 200mm 10 sec exposure taken 28th October (edited RAW image). Visual observations 29th confirmed condensation around coma with green tinge.

John Nicholls

(John Nicholls ... ) The first two are from John Nicholls (taken 29 Oct). Comet's fuzziness is very clear.

Mike Jackson

(Mike Jackson ... ) I managed to get some images of comet holmes tonight (wednesday) i think the central dot in the image is the core most of the stars in the image are on my star map but no stars are present at the comets location. Ive tried to balance the local star colours which seems to show the comet to have a slight green colour.
I tried a number of different exposures from 10 sec down to 70 sec at 200 iso and in the end stacked 11* 70 second exposures, scope was the ed80

(Richard Prettyman ... ) Here is an image I got last night during the earlier clear spell. The core is very overexposed but stretching the image in photoshop shows a fainter outer coma which I couldn’t see visually. Other details on the image.

(Ann Bonell ... ) Today's final image is from my husband, John. It was taken on Oct 28 from Burroughs Road, Ratby and is a view of Perseus showing the comet.
